YIT Supported Projects

Recently, the Youth Investment in Tasmania Committee spent a day of grueling decision making processes reviewing a total of 36 applications with the purpose to fund 9 of these projects, some in full and some allocating partial funding to.  The following are the successful projects.

 

Computer Use For Free

In conjunction with Geilston Bay Primary School, the Risdon Vale Neighbourhood Centre would provide free computer use to youth in the area which would assist in word processing resumes, job searching and accessing information on the internet.

Youth in Action Conference

This project is part of the ruMAD? in Tasmania program.  The two day conference consists of a number of workshops designed to encourage students to take action for social and environmental change and to build empowering links and partnerships between young people, schools and community organisations working for change.

Kids With Cameras

Children chosen from schools around the Brighton Municipality will be given disposable cameras to take pictures of what they think are assets to their community.  Once developed, the pictures would be showcased in the Brighton Civic Centre as part of a week long exhibition.

Clones and Clones

The project involves 8 little known bands from Melbourne and Hobart donating one track to appear on an EP that will be distributed online.  Each band will receive 50 copies of the EP to promote themselves, resulting in the Melbourne bands promoting Hobart's music scene and vise versa.

A Sense of Belonging

This project involves a 1 week workshop for Sudanese youth, providing them with leadership and relationship building exercises designed to create a stronger link and understanding between Sudanese youth and the wider community.  It will also involve a friendly soccer match between the youth and the Police Citizens Youth Club.  Gay Leek, president of the Australian National Sudanese Youth Council would be flown down from Canberra to assist with the workshop.

LIFT: Mobile Drop In Centre

LIFT's mobile drop in centre van will provide information, resources and entertainment to youth who are living in isolated areas (Central Coast Municipality) with little or no access to public transport.

The Village

The Village is a community centre in Triabunna which "promotes and develops solutions to living in the 21st century and links young people to the broader community" through a number of educational, arts and environmental projects.  These include maintaining a vegetable and a native plants garden, as well as offering a drug and alcohol free venue for youth to socialise.

Get High On Life

This project is aimed at disengaged, 'at risk' children in Ulverstone who face several difficulties in accessing formal education,  The project provides engaging education issues such as mental health, substance abuse, family violence, positive self image and sexual health.  The project aims to "provide fun and engaging opportunities for the development of skills that will enable young people to make informed and positive life choices".

Take Off: Mentoring Disadvantaged Youth through Surfing

Take Off is a project aimed at enriching the lives of economically and educationally disadvantaged youth from ages 12-18.  The project provides positive life experiences to the youth through an informal mentoring program in a safe and supportive environment as well as teaching them to swim confidently and learn to surf during a series of camps, surfing trips and activities.
